After 25+ years of coaching professional athletes, and hundreds of hours working directly with kickers, I’ve seen how different the kicker’s mindset is from any other athlete’s. Working with the top kickers in the world, I’ve formulated a specific 3-step Kicker Code for the demands of this position.

The challenge — coaching focus

After an up-and-down season at Alabama, competition was brought in for the kicking role through the transfer portal. Following an average spring, Conor needed to rebuild his confidence, manage pressure, and prove he could win the job back heading into fall camp.

  • Transfer competition raised the pressure for the starting job
  • Needed stronger confidence and faster recovery after misses

The A-GAME work

Conor hired Steven before camp and worked with him throughout camp and the season. Together they focused on confidence, mindset management, staying present under pressure, and bouncing back immediately after misses so he could trust his training and compete free.

  • Started before fall camp and continued through the season
  • Built tools for confidence, recovery, and pressure management

The result

Conor entered camp behind statistically, but his mindset and performance steadily rose. Three days before the 2026 season, he was named the starter. Through his first two games, he was perfect—showing what happens when preparation meets an A-GAME mindset.

  • Named the starter three days before the 2026 season
  • Perfect through his first two games

The challenge — coaching focus

In his second year as a punter, Kai Kroeger was competing for the Houston Texans’ starting punter role. By camp reports, he appeared to be the slight underdog. He hired Steven to help him build a performance routine, regulate emotions, increase consistency, and develop dominant confidence under pressure.

  • Entered camp battling for the starting punter job
  • Needed stronger consistency, emotional regulation, and confidence

The A-GAME work

Steven worked with Kai to create a customized performance routine built for daily preparation and game-day execution. Their work centered on confidence, mindset management, emotional regulation, staying present, and trusting his technique so he could punt freely and consistently when it mattered most.

  • Built a repeatable performance routine for camp and games
  • Focused on confidence, consistency, and emotional control

The result

Before the final preseason game, Kai was named the Texans’ starting punter. After his first regular-season NFL game, his performance ranked among the best ever seen in a single NFL game and moved him from near the bottom of 2025 ratings into the top 5 after Week 1.

  • Named the starter before the final preseason game
  • Jumped from near the bottom in 2025 to top 5 after his first game

The challenge — coaching focus

When Kaʻimi began working with Steven midway through the 2021 season, he was already an accomplished NFL kicker and former Lou Groza Award winner, but his season had not been as consistent as he wanted. His goal wasn’t simply to fix a problem—it was to discover how good he could become. In one of the NFL’s highest-pressure positions, he wanted to elevate his mental game and become more focused, confident, composed, and consistent when every kick mattered.

  • Wasn't converting his talent into consistency
  • Came to Steven mid-season, 2021

The A-GAME work

Using Steven’s proprietary A-GAME Analysis, they identified what Kaʻimi needed mentally and emotionally to consistently perform at his best. Together, they developed customized performance routines around mindfulness, flow state, optimism, self-compassion, focus, nervous-system regulation, and A-GAME Activation. The objective was simple: stay present, trust the preparation, and perform with confidence under pressure.

  • 61-yard FG vs. Seattle — a Texans franchise record
  • Finished the season without missing a kick while working with Steven.

The result

Some of the accomplishments are:

  • 2021: Hit a 61-yard field goal, setting Texans franchise and NRG Stadium records.
  • 2022: #3 in the NFL at 93.5% and named a Pro Bowl Alternate.
  • 2023: #2 in the NFL at 96.4%, Texans franchise record with 20 consecutive field goals.
  • 2024: Made 13 field goals from 50+ yards and was again named a Pro Bowl Alternate.
  • 2025: Rated #1; led the NFL with 44 made field goals, tying the NFL single-season record, despite missing two games.
  • 2026: Signed a two-year extension that made him the highest-paid kicker in the NFL at the time of signing.
  • No. 1-rated kicker in the NFL
  • Highest-paid kicker at the time of signing
  • Made 210 of 215 extra points, an impressive 97.7% conversion rate.
  • Had the most accurate single season in Texans history in 2023, making 27 of 28 field goals for 96.4%.

The challenge — coaching focus

Steven was hired to mentally prepare 40+ NFL prospects for the most important interview of their athletic career: the 2022 and 2023 NFL Combine.

The A-GAME work

Over an eight-week period, Steven’s coaching focused on how to:

  • Communicate effectively in interviews with team owners and head coaches.
  • Have an optimistic mindset, be mindful, and practice self-compassion.
  • Regulate one’s mental and emotional state.
  • Perform at one’s A-GAME when it matters most.

The result

A-GAME reports that the group included five first-round picks and multiple second- through fifth-round picks. Most importantly, every athlete was fully prepared for the intense mental and physical rigors of the Combine.

Ryan Capretta’s perspective

“We brought Steven in to help our 2022 and 2023 NFL Pre-Combine athletes maximize their mindset. As a former athlete and performance expert, he connected immediately and gave our players practical tools they could use under pressure. Most importantly, he’s deeply passionate and genuinely cares about helping athletes perform at their best—on and off the field.”

It works in practice, but what happens when you feel the pressure?

Long waits. Few chances. Everyone is watching.

How do you respond to a missed kick? The coach is yelling, the fans are upset, your teammates grumble.

  • Are you 100% confident in the next kick?
  • Do you get calmer as the pressure rises?
  • Can you silence the crowd and step into your highest state?

The Goal: Own that mental space and take complete control of the moment!

The mental side of kicking

You Train the Kick. NOW Train the Moment.

Football kickers spend long stretches waiting, then have only seconds to execute. The Kicker Code focuses on the mental skills behind that moment: preparing with purpose, staying present, and returning to your routine after every attempt. This is the part of the game they don't teach you.

Before the Kick

Build a pre-kick routine that brings your attention back to what you can control. Practice your breathing, focus cues, and self-talk alongside your technical kicking work.

Under Pressure

Work on handling the scoreboard, crowd noise, and expectations without letting them take over your attention. Learn to trust your preparation and commit to the kick in front of you.

After a Miss

Develop a reset routine that separates the previous result from your next opportunity. Learn to review a miss constructively and return your focus to preparation.

For high school kickers developing confidence, college kickers competing for a starting role, and professional kickers managing high expectations. Parents and kicking coaches can use the assessment as a starting point for a conversation about an athlete’s mental game.

Football Kicker Mindset FAQs

I already have a kicking coach. Do I need this?

Technical kicking practice builds your mechanics. Mental performance training develops how you respond when the pressure rises. Keep your technical coach. This is mindset training. Steven trains how you respond to pressure and can coordinate with your coach with your permission. After 5 years and 1,000+ hours working with kickers, Steven has seen how different the kicker mindset is from any other athletes. Working with the top kickers in the world, he has formulated a specific 3-step Kicker Code designed specifically for the unique demands of this position.

Do I have to be in a slump?

No. Build a repeatable mental routine before pressure exposes a gap. You can train your mental game while your kicking is going well. You can work on confidence and performance routines before a slump develops. Coaching focuses on skills you can practice throughout the season.

What happens after I submit?

You’ll see your self-rated mindset score and three lowest-rated areas. Steven reviews your application to assess whether coaching is a fit. Coaching fees are discussed after that review. Then we'll start training you to be A-Game Ready at all times!

What is mental performance coaching for football kickers?

It is coaching focused on the attention, emotions, self-talk, and routines you bring to practice and competition. Kicker Code applies these skills to the demands of field goals and extra points, alongside your technical training.

How can I build confidence as a football kicker?

Start with a repeatable process: prepare consistently, choose a clear focus cue, and review each attempt without turning one result into a judgment of your ability. Steven helps you develop and practice a mental routine suited to your kicking.

What should I do mentally after a missed field goal?

Use the reset routine you have practiced: acknowledge the result, settle your breathing, identify any useful feedback, and return to the next task. The aim is to learn from the miss without carrying it into the next kick.

Is Kicker Code for high school kickers as well as college and pro players?

The coaching is designed around the individual athlete and the demands of their level. High school, college, and professional kickers can start with the mindset assessment and apply to discuss fit.

Is Kicker Code the same as the A-Game Ready online course?

Kicker Code is Steven Griffith’s kicker-specific mental performance approach. The A-Game Ready online course provides broader, self-paced mental performance education for athletes. The coaching application and course pricing links lead to separate options.
